Why Turkey Is the New China for Private Label Apparel

Global brands are de-risking from China. Turkey is the primary beneficiary for private label apparel.

Turkey's combined textile and apparel exports reached $26 billion in 2025, with the country ranking fifth globally in textile exports and sixth in ready-to-wear clothing. The apparel sector directly employs 1.2 million people and supports over 2 million livelihoods, exporting to more than 180 countries. Turkey is the second largest apparel supplier to the European Union — and its position in the US market is growing steadily year on year.

For international buyers de-risking from Chinese manufacturing, Turkey is the primary alternative. The quality is higher. The lead times are faster. The certifications are stronger. And the private label capability — from design to delivery — is among the best in the world.

Istanbul — The Apparel Manufacturing Capital

Istanbul houses the largest concentration of apparel manufacturers in Turkey and one of the largest in the world. The key production districts are spread across the city, each with its own specialisation.

Merter is Istanbul's wholesale and production heart. Hundreds of manufacturers and wholesalers operate here producing knitwear, denim, woven shirts, outerwear, and fast-fashion lines. Merter is the district where buyers come to place volume orders quickly — the infrastructure for sampling, production, and logistics is entirely self-contained.

Zeytinburnu concentrates leather apparel, outerwear, and tailored clothing. Over 40,000 apparel manufacturers operate across Istanbul's production districts combined — a density of manufacturing capability unmatched outside of China.

Osmanbey is Istanbul's fashion wholesale district — the hub for mid-to-premium women's fashion, contemporary sportswear, and trend-led ready-to-wear. Brands sourcing fashion-forward collections come to Osmanbey for design inspiration and production capability simultaneously.

Sultangazi handles high-volume production — basics, underwear, casualwear — for export buyers needing large-run manufacturing at competitive prices.

Arnavutköy is Istanbul's primary underwear and intimate apparel manufacturing zone. Turkish underwear production — particularly women's lingerie, men's basics, and children's underwear — is exported across Europe and the Middle East. Quality cotton construction, European sizing, and private label capability from low MOQs.

Bursa leads Turkey in knitwear production. Bursa manufacturers specialise in cotton knitwear, polo shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sportswear — predominantly for European retail and private label brands. Children's clothing is also a Bursa strength, with numerous factories producing certified children's knitwear for EU markets.

Gaziantep is Turkey's denim capital — and one of the most important denim production cities in the world. Turkish denim is exported globally, with Gaziantep manufacturers producing selvedge denim, stretch denim, organic denim, and technical denim for brands across Europe, the USA, and Latin America.

Turkey vs China — Why Buyers Are Switching

Turkey is the third largest apparel supplier to the EU and accounts for approximately 16% of the EU's total textile imports. The shift away from Chinese sourcing is structural — not cyclical. Lead times from Turkey to Europe are 3–5 days by road. Quality consistency is higher. Certification standards are stronger. And for private label brands building long-term supplier relationships, Turkey offers transparency that Chinese manufacturing cannot.

Turkey is also actively developing its export presence in Latin America — Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Chile are growing markets for Turkish apparel, particularly private label denim and knitwear. Turkish manufacturers are increasingly attending Latin American trade exhibitions and establishing direct distribution relationships across the region.

Logistics

Europe: 3–5 days road freight. USA: 20–25 days sea. Latin America: 25–35 days sea. Lead time: 25–45 days from order confirmation.
